One of the most popular Qurans in print is the King Fahd of Saudi Arabia edition, printed in Medina in 1405 Hijri (1984-1985) with millions of copies distributed throughout the world. It carries the inscription: “A gift from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd Ibn Abdul Aziz for the spreading of Allah’s Word.” These editions, like all copies of the Quran, today and for hundreds of years past, are the “Othmani” Quran, based on the copy of the third Caliph, Othman bin Affan (644-656 CE). This Quran was printed by the renowned calligrapher Uthman Taha. Born in Syria in 1934, he acquired degrees in Shariah and Arabic language from Damascus. His first Quran was in 1970 for Syria’s religious authority. Taha moved to Saudi Arabia in the early 1980s to work at the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran. He is famous for his beautiful, clear, easy-to-read style, making the Quran he printed one of the world’s most popular books.
