Tom of Finland XXL [oversized - 34.5 x 25.5], edited by Dian Hanson (TASCHEN, 2025), is a monumental retrospective devoted to Touko Laaksonen (1920–1991), better known as Tom of Finland, one of the most recognizable and influential figures in 20th-century erotic art. Bringing together more than 1,000 images spanning six decades of his career, this lavish oversized volume documents the extraordinary development of an artist whose idealized images of masculine beauty profoundly influenced gay visual culture and eventually entered the broader history of contemporary art, fashion, and popular culture.

TASCHEN first introduced Laaksonen's work to a wider international audience in 1998 with The Art of Pleasure. Until then, Tom of Finland had enjoyed an intense cult following within the international gay community but remained comparatively little known to the general public. In 2009, TASCHEN produced the definitive Tom of Finland XXL, an ambitious collector's edition created with the assistance of the Tom of Finland Foundation and drawing upon collections throughout the United States and Europe.
The book contains over 1,000 drawings, paintings, and sketches, including works that had never previously been reproduced. Other images, once published separately or removed from their original context, are restored to the sequential arrangements intended by the artist. Together they provide an exceptionally broad survey of Laaksonen's visual language and reveal the artistic development behind the instantly recognizable "Tom's Men."
The volume encompasses the full range of Tom of Finland's work: sensitive portraits, celebrations of male physicality, explicitly erotic compositions, humorous fantasies, tender expressions of affection and love, and moving tributes to young men lost during the AIDS epidemic. Beyond their erotic dimension, these works document changing ideas about masculinity, sexuality, identity and freedom during the second half of the 20th century. Laaksonen's confident, hypermasculine figures helped challenge older stereotypes and contributed to the creation of a new visual vocabulary of gay identity.
The artwork is complemented by eight commissioned essays examining Tom of Finland's personal, cultural and social impact, with contributions by such notable figures as Camille Paglia, John Waters, Armistead Maupin and Todd Oldham. Art historian Edward Lucie-Smith contributes a scholarly examination of individual drawings, placing Laaksonen's technique and imagery within a wider art-historical context. The result is both an impressive visual archive and a substantial critical study of the artist's legacy.
This 2025 TASCHEN edition, edited by Dian Hanson, retains the complete content of the celebrated original XXL publication while making the monumental retrospective available at a considerably more accessible price. Still imposing in scale and exceptionally rich in reproductions, it is an important reference work and collector's volume for readers interested in Tom of Finland, LGBTQ+ cultural history, erotic art, illustration, masculinity and 20th-century visual culture.
Dian Hanson is an American editor and author closely associated with TASCHEN, where she has edited numerous publications devoted to erotic art, photography and popular culture. Her extensive editorial work has played an important role in documenting areas of visual culture historically overlooked by conventional art publishing.
Touko Laaksonen, known internationally as Tom of Finland, was a Finnish artist whose distinctive drawings of idealized, muscular men made him a defining figure in modern gay iconography.
